Brief History: Originally, KIM was a car assembling plant functioning as a division of GAZ. In January of 1939 it was decided to make KIM an independent factory specializing in manufacture of small cars. The main objective of the plant became production of KIM-10 and the previous assembly of GAZ-MM trucks was moved to Rostov. The plan for 1941 required production of 50,000 KIM-10. But because Stalin did not like these cars, very few of them were made. After the Great Patriotic War (WWII), KIM was renamed into MZMA. MZMA started out with production of Moskvich-400-420 [etymology: Moskvich in Russian language means "a man from Moscow"] [like much of post-WWII production in the USSR, the design of this car was a copy of German technology, in this case, Opel-Kadett-K38 was copied]. The vigorous development of car industry in the Soviet Union after the war meant that auto racing was also on the rise. For that purpose a prototype sports car Moskvich-403E-424E was made in 1950. And more sports car models followed, all of them being designed by I.A.Gladilniy and Lev M. Shugurov. In 1968 the factory was once more renamed, this time it became AZLK. In 1986, AZLK started its newest production line of AZLK-2141 "Moskvich".
