Originally, KIM was a car assembling plant functioning as a division of GAZ. In January of 1939 it was decided to make KIM an independent factory specializing in manufacture of small cars. The main objective of the plant became production of KIM-10 and the previous assembly of GAZ-MM trucks was moved to Rostov. The plan for 1941 required production of 50,000 KIM-10. First cars were assembled on 25 April 1941. Stalin was showed these cars for inspection and he found a few shortcomings. He did not like the 2-door body and the old-fashioned "sticking out" headlights. So, a new 4-door body was designed, receiving name KIM-10-52. In 1941, 2 KIM-10-52 were ever made. Also, between 1940-1941, 500 KIM-10-50 (2-door body w/ headlights incorporated into the streamliners) and KIM-10-51 (rare carbriolet version of KIM-10-50) were made. Finally, 10 KIM-10-50 were made in Ulianovsk in 1945 (long after production stopped at KIM).
