*These trucks are taking part in operations during WWII. At the beginning of the War, GAZ-AA and GAZ-MM made up 55% of vehicles in the Red Army. In the 35 kb picture, the driver's door is open as he is delivering food to the besieged city of Leningrad so that if the truck breaks the ice on Ladoga lake the driver will be able to jump out. In the 30 kb picture, again, a column of trucks is driving on the icy "Road of Life" to bring food to the heroic city of Leningrad. During the war years, GAZ, ZIS, UAZ and UralZIS made 205,000 vehicles, 150,000 of which were used in the Army.

**These GAZ-AA are standing in front of GAZ plant in 1932. The "Auto conveyor" newspaper wrote on 31 January 1932 "22 of January at 6 in the evening the first automobile came off the conveyor. At 8 o'clock one after the other 4 trucks went out of the production room. The Bolshevik program is done. The country has gotten the first 25 cars." [16]

GAZ-AA whose production began the same year that the factory in Gorky was built, was almost an identical copy of an American Ford-AA (19 KB [34], 28 KB [35], 26 KB [35]). In 1949, 1950 GAZ-MM was no longer produced in Gorky (Nizhni Novgorod) but in Ulianovsk (1947-1950) on the UAZ plant (67 KB [28/7]). All 3 above trucks were widely used during WWII. GAZ-AA was the most common one as it was used to bring food on "the Road of Life" to the besieged Leningrad going across the frozen lake Ladoga. Another vehicle with this type of cabin: take a look at GAZ-AAAA (32 KB [7], 34 KB [7], 67 KB [3]) pictures which show 3 axle GAZ-A. In addition there were some GAZ-33 (62 KB [7]) made, its only difference from GAZ-AAA was its 6 X 6 off-road wheel formula, in contrast to GAZ-AAA's 6 X 4.

As part of the measure of economy during the war years, GAZ-AA and GAZ-MM were made in simplified and cheaper versions. This war version had wood and tarpaulin cabins, edged fenders, one headlight and front wheels lacked brakes. Along with these, GAZ made all-wheel drive Chevrolet-G7107 from parts brought in accordance with the Lend-Lease act.
