* parameters in (parenthesis) for ZMA-401-420 only if different from ZMA-400-420.

After the Great Patriotic War (WWII) in 1947, KIM was renamed into ZMA. ZMA started out with production of Moskvich-400-420 [etymology: Moskvich in Russian language means "a man from Moscow"] [like much of post-WWII production in the USSR, the design of this car was a copy of German technology, in this case, Opel-Kadett-K38 (16 KB color, side view [9]) was copied]. Later, wooden van 400-422 (1949-1954) and 401-422 (1954-1956), cabriolet 420A (1949-1952), and pickup 420B (1954-1956) appeared. There was also medical version of the car, with light on the roof, medical aid kit, and washable interior. Indices 400 and 401 are really only engine models. (often the 420 [sedan] bodies are referred to as 400 and 401, while other models are more commonly properly referred to by their model number). (Thus, 400-422 had 400 engine and 401-422 had 401 engine; 422 had the same dimensions as their 420 counterparts. The reason why 422s are almost extinct is because they were prohibited for private ownership in the USSR. These vans had 3 windows [windshield, driver's and passenger's]). The first Moskvich-400-420 was assembled on 4 December 1946. Station wagon Moskvich-400-421 never went beyond the prototype model. From 1954, Moskvich-420 was made with a modernized engine (whose parameters are given in above table in parenthesis). M-401 differed in appearance from M-400 in that it had sidelights mounted on front fenders. However, militia soon required all cars to have those lights and so owners of M-400 had to install them manually, and thus all M-400 and M-401 have those lights, but M-400 has different lights in different locations, while M-401 has standard ones.Overall, 1946-1956, 247,439 Moskvich-400 and Moskvich-401 were made.
